My little sister is getting married! It’s very exciting times around these parts. I will be a part of the wedding party, so I won’t gt to shoot her wedding (which I know will be a fantastic time!) so I was thrilled that I got to shoot their engagement photos in Harbour Grace and Salmon Cove Sands!

I love you sister (even if that crouchety lady at the dress store says we sound like the Berenstein Bears!)

I saw the Gullage’s in Edmonton last fall when they drove from Calgary to see me for family photos. At the time, we were going for crisp fall portraits, but it was the hottest fall day ever on record. We were all lovely though, sweating in our fall clothes!

Little Maddox has grown so much since I saw him last year, and I was glad they made the decision to meet me in the Historic Town of Trinity, in Newfoundland for this years family photos. If you ever get a chance to visit Newfoundland, Trinity is a must see! I have very fond memories of my university days, spending summers and weekends in and around this tiny town!

When Krista booked their photos this year because she is expecting and not at the point yet where we would normally do maternity photos. Having been pregnant before, I know how blah you feel mid pregnancy, so I was stunned when I saw them waiting outside the Dock Marina Restaurant in Trinity. She looks fantastic! I wish I looked that good when I was pregnant!

It was great to see you again Krista, Trevor and Maddox! I hope you enjoy your family photo sneak peak! Have a safe trip back!

I was just sitting minding my business looking at Facebook when a friend shared this tidbit of info.

Now, you see I try very hard to keep my opinions to myself these days, being the public face of my company, and a mom, and all of that good stuff that leads you to bite your tongue. But seriously, again? Last month it was a heavily armed and dangerous murderer on the loose in Alberta. Out on a day pass with a plain clothed Corrections Officer, who he ‘over powered’ then went on a little sabbatical.

Now this.

I get that the guy wants to get loose. Who wouldn’t, especially if you are a stand up guy; as all murderers are apt to be. But for goodness sake, reading the article is what turned my stomach. He escaped from a ‘Minimum-Security Prison’. He was noticed missing after a ‘headcount’ and no one knows what he was wearing? Is this a man convicted of first murder and aggravated assault or a ninth grader sneaking into a girl’s room on a  band trip?

Who is making these decisions? Who is in charge here?  Is anyone accountable?

I am done with my rant now. I have to go make sure my windows and doors are securely fastened. Because no one seems to be in control enough to keep the bad guys in, I sure hope I can keep them out.

Day 2 -How to Take Better Kids Portraits

You may never have noticed it but now that I mention it, it’s all that you will see.

Photos of the front part of your child’s skull, the top of his forehead, and a warped view of his body, as you see him every day while you are standing over him trying to coerce him into changing into clean clothes, or to stop picking on his sister. We all have these snapshot style photos. Facebook is full of them, and so are most family albums. But it just doesn’t have to be that way.

You see, God himself wanted you to capture beautiful images of your children, featuring those big brown or blue eyes, and that smile that lights your soul on fire. That my friend is why he gave us knees.
Bend or kneel down so that his face and your face (with the camera in front of it) are at the same level. Focus on his eyes, and click the magic button. It’s THAT easy. That one single act will improve your photos by 100 percent. Try it, today. Then tell me how big a difference it made!

Don’t believe me?

Fire off a shot like you normally would, then kneel down, zoom in a little so his face nearly fills the frame entirely, then focus on his eyes and say something kind or funny so he looks at you. When you see the difference, you will be astounded. For real, get out your camera and do it.

Then you can tell me what happened in the comments section below!

I love kids and I love Christmas, so when Shawna called me, wondering if I would be available to take photos at the Christmas party taking place on the base last Sunday, I was thrilled to say yes! My lovely Cheryl came with me, and we spent a fun afternoon photographing some beautiful children and some truly wonderful families with Santa Claus! I might have been as excited as the kids when I saw Santa pull up in a fire truck. I swear, it was all to do with Santa, and nothing to do with the Fireman ;)

Familes of these wondering kids can view and order the photos here! http://islandmistphotography.smugmug.com/Holidays/Santa/Photos-with-Santa/14966584_hPQp3 I have been swamped with emails wondering when these would be ready so I am happy to show you! Parents, please note that in order to have these photos prior to Christmas, all orders must be placed on or before December 14, 2008.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

It’s been such an incredible fall for family photos. Even though most of the leaves are long gone, the weather has been absolutely incredible. When Andrea and her boys met up with me at Rundle Park, it was an excellent day for photos. It was crisp and bright, my favorite fall weather!

It was great meeting you and your boys! Thanks for looking me up while you were in town!

It’s a happy day when I get to photograph people as beautiful as Allison and Duane! A few weeks back, I shot Allison’s sister Shelly’s family photos and I was thrilled when Allison messaged to book engagement photos! These two are getting married somewhere hot and sunny next year!

When I arrived at Allison’s parents place where we were going to shoot her engagment photos, her Dad, who was one of my High School English teachers (and as such is probably cringing at my grammar if he is reading this) was driving around on his new tractor. We ended the session with a cute picture of one of Mr. Stagg’s pride and joys hanging out with another!

Thanks for a great afternoon Allison and Duane, it was fun hanging out and hiking around such a gorgeous piece of land. Just editing these photos made me homesick for Newfoundland! Congratulations on your engagement!

Jenny and her little fur babies met me at Bowring Park in St. John’s last Sunday for some fun photos together. Jenny had won a gift certificate way back, in a contest hosted on my Facebook group, and I was glad that we got to schedule a time while I was here in Newfoundland! Both of her dogs are extremely well behaved! I was told that the little one, Joy, is hard to photograph because both her face and eyes are black. I totally see how it is a challenge, but I think there are some super cute shots of her from this session! Here is a sneak peak for Jenny!

Here is a sneak peak for the Pretty Family! I was so happy that I was in my hometown of Clarenville on one of my middle school teacher’s birthday. Not that I make a point of celebrating with past teachers, but because all of his kids had flown home to help him celebrate his 60th, and I was there to capture an hour or so of hanging out in the backyard together for them. Heather, came all the way from California. I suspect she winters a little better than Stephen, Gale and little Jane who came home from the Northwest Territories. Greg completed the family photo by flying in from Halifax. Because I think most of these visitors were a suprise, I suspect Mr. Pretty had a very special birthday (and not just because he got to hang out with me!)

It was great hanging out and catching up with you guys! I hope you enjoy your sneak peak! Jane is adorable!

When Suezn messaged about photos while I am home in Newfoundland on vacation, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. She was one of my very best friends in High School. Almost every weekend I would travel an hour, whatever way I could figure to invade her parents house in Bonavista. I still have reoccuring nightmares about the Marilyn Manson posters in her room when we were younger but I was really glad to catch up with her, considering just about 10 years has passed since I saw her hilarious self last!

I love the picture above, and the picture below. I might be killled for showing the one above, but it’s just an indication of how windy it really was at the top of Signal Hill that day. Photo purists, please don’t email me- I know I cut off part of Wendy’s ear. She was well composed until a big gust of wind blew her ear, my camera and me. I just couldn’t not share how cute both facial expressions are- even if the photos have major compositional issues! dog photo taken on Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland
