Jenny and her little fur babies met me at Bowring Park in St. John’s last Sunday for some fun photos together. Jenny had won a gift certificate way back, in a contest hosted on my Facebook group, and I was glad that we got to schedule a time while I was here in Newfoundland! Both of her dogs are extremely well behaved! I was told that the little one, Joy, is hard to photograph because both her face and eyes are black. I totally see how it is a challenge, but I think there are some super cute shots of her from this session! Here is a sneak peak for Jenny!

I can say without doubt that if it wasn’t for the fabulous lady you see pictured here, I might never be living my life, doing what I love. You see, in addition to being a Mother, Lawyer, Belly Dancer, and Dance studio owner, Lori is just simply a strong woman. She gave me a giant push towards making photography a career, and not just a hobby. She believed in me when I wasn’t sure there was anything to believe in. When I wasn’t sure where to start she insisted that I just start. And I did. And I am really thankful for her vote of confidence. So I was exstatic to hear her jingle jangling toward me down Duckworth Street in St. John’s last weekend. You see, Lori has also found what she loves to do. So we celebrated that in front of one of her favorite old buildings downtown, which just happens to be the old Court House. Perfectly fitting for a beautiful Lawyer, in a stunning costume and silver wings, who can balance a sword on her head, in my humble opinion.

It was amazing catching up with you Lori! I hope we get to see each other again soon!

Way back in May, I heard from Allison, a friend from the past. She wanted to buy a gift certificate for her sister Shelly (another friend from the past!) as a gift for Nathan, her God Child and Nephew! I thought it was super thoughtful. I was so glad to meet Nathan (and his Dad) while Shelly and I got caught up on the last 10 years or so, while I was in Corner Brook last week!

Meet Jennifer, Scott and Gavin. Cuteness personified. Truly. I am in love with this session for a number of reasons. I will name some.
1.) Totally relaxing. Jennifer has seen my work and understood what I was doing. She didn`t try to force Gavin to stare at the camera and smile (even though he did it all on his own at times!). The photos came out unbelievably fun and casual.

2.) This family arrived co-ordinated but not matching. Does my heart good to see them all like they are from the same page of ‘Stylish People Magazine’. Let’s discuss Jennifer’s dress. Comfortable, casual and stylish all rolled into one. Take notes people, take notes.

3.) My favorite place in Newfoundland in my Grandmother’s. Many generations of Grandfather fished from a fishing stage directly across the street from her house, and now it belongs to my Uncle Bill. Because Jennifer and I are from the same area (she is a good friend of my cousin), she agreed to meet me there, even though it was a drive for both of us. I am so glad she was up for it because I think the results are fantastic! There are bunches and bunches of these photos, and I wish I could share them all, but here is a small sample- I am sure you will get the idea!

My Dad has been reading books by Deepak Chopra since I arrived here, and has several times, referenced him when things weren`t going exactly my way. But I have to agree, the universe was trying to tell me something when it came to Alison and Brad`s photos. Alison wanted them taken last year, but Brad wasn`t in the province. So we scheduled their session for this visit, as soon as I knew that both Brad and I would be in Newfoundland at the same time. Things would go perfectly, I just knew it! I was really looking forward to their photos, because she is awesome! However, after Alison had gone to have her hair done, they both got dressed, I packed my gear, and they picked me up (not my usual mode of transport but I have known her for years), and we drove to where we were taking the photos, the wind arrived and was enough to blow our head off. We drove to a more sheltered location, and before we got there, it started to rain.

Not to worry we figured, we could do it again tomorrow.

So, we did it all again. Hair, clothes, camera gear, beautiful couple, photographer, camera gear all loaded into the car, and off we went. It was overcast but managable. I like overcast, it’s like a bit soft box in the sky. This would be great. So you can imagine my excitement when, as we arrived, so did the rain.

Alison owns the Grapevine, a floral and decor store in Clarenville, and she had a number of weddings to prepare for over the weekend, which left Friday and Saturday impossible, and I was out of town on Sunday. This didn’t look good. Monday, I was still out of town, and it was foggy in St. John’s, but when my Dad told me the weather was nice in Clarenville, I just knew I had to get back there.

So guess what? Perserverance payed off and what the universe was tryiing to tell me all along was apparent. We weren’t meant to do the photos on an overcast day, because there was a huge wide open blue sky day waiting for me around the corner. I just had to have the patience to wait for it to arrive!

I love these photos of Alison and Brad. I sat up late last night torn over which ones to blog. I love the part of my job that is making such hard decisions. I hope they love them just as much as I do, and they have the casual photos of themselves that Alison was looking to hang on her walls!

Brotherly love in family portraits
I am going to start this post with this image, because it cracks me up. In fact, I think I laughed out loud as it was happening during the Frye’s family portrait session, in Clarenville, but I laughed louder when the image popped up on my screen tonight. I had to share it. There is no chance this little brother is going to grow up to be a wimp!

I had a great time taking these photos. It was a bright sunny day in Clarenville, with nothing but blue skies. It was a bit on the bright side for pictures, and the tide wasn’t where I needed it to be, but we got some awesome images out of it, despite all of our obstacles. These are a just a quick sneak peak for Michelle and her family!

I am really glad that Michelle is one of my Facebook fans, and booked photos while I am home in Newfoundland on vacation! It was great hanging out with them!

Here is a sneak peak for the Pretty Family! I was so happy that I was in my hometown of Clarenville on one of my middle school teacher’s birthday. Not that I make a point of celebrating with past teachers, but because all of his kids had flown home to help him celebrate his 60th, and I was there to capture an hour or so of hanging out in the backyard together for them. Heather, came all the way from California. I suspect she winters a little better than Stephen, Gale and little Jane who came home from the Northwest Territories. Greg completed the family photo by flying in from Halifax. Because I think most of these visitors were a suprise, I suspect Mr. Pretty had a very special birthday (and not just because he got to hang out with me!)

It was great hanging out and catching up with you guys! I hope you enjoy your sneak peak! Jane is adorable!

When Suezn messaged about photos while I am home in Newfoundland on vacation, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. She was one of my very best friends in High School. Almost every weekend I would travel an hour, whatever way I could figure to invade her parents house in Bonavista. I still have reoccuring nightmares about the Marilyn Manson posters in her room when we were younger but I was really glad to catch up with her, considering just about 10 years has passed since I saw her hilarious self last!

I love the picture above, and the picture below. I might be killled for showing the one above, but it’s just an indication of how windy it really was at the top of Signal Hill that day. Photo purists, please don’t email me- I know I cut off part of Wendy’s ear. She was well composed until a big gust of wind blew her ear, my camera and me. I just couldn’t not share how cute both facial expressions are- even if the photos have major compositional issues! dog photo taken on Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland

I was so lucky to meet Amy Parsons, or ‘Other Amy’. When I was looking for a make-up artist for my recent ‘Sultry in the City Boudoir Photography Marathon,’ I didn’t know where to start looking. My sister Maggie sent me some great online videos about makeup artists, make by a girl in St. John’s and it just happened that she has an awesome name like me.

She did a phenominal job with the make-up on all of the ladies, and I was thrilled when she and Adam came to see me for Engagement Photos on Signal Hill in St. John’s!

Kayaking in Newfoundland
I might catch heck for posting the picture above, but I just couldn’t resist. It’s of my Dad, Nick Donovan, kayaking with my daughter Bridget. He isn’t the least bit mad, he is just trying to get up enough momentum to power the kayak up onto the beach. I just happened to have the camera handy to capture the priceless facial expression. When you are done laughing to kill yourself at him, look at Bridget’s expression. Is that not pure happiness?

I feel a little like I have fallen off the grid since I started my working vacation in Newfoundland. I have just been so busy shooting amazing people and catching up with awesome friends and family that I haven’t hand much time to blog. However, these were too fun not to share!

I am in Newfoundland until September 7th if you are interested in booking photos! After that, I will be back to shooting in Edmonton! Contact me at amydonovan@shaw.ca or (780) 271-7082
