Island in the Mist Photography LOGOSometimes thinking of the easiest thing is the hardest thing to do. Take my logo for example. I have been a wedding and portrait photographer for years, in both St. John’s and Edmonton. I have asked everyone I know from other photographers to the lady who makes my Chicken Bacon Ranch Subway sandwiches for their input about possible logo ideas. We all came up empty – for years. The only tasks not successfully completed by man; curing the common cold, sweeping up spilled sugar, and designing a logo with a name like Island in the Mist Photography.

It’s my own fault. I came up with the very long name long before I lived in Prairies. Back when I was in Newfoundland and what I wanted to shoot couldn’t be shot because of the weather. I called Newfoundland a Foggy Old Rock. Somehow, it wasn’t so flattering, but Island in the Mist did conjure up prettier mental images.

But I digress. No one could make me a logo. The name was too long. Designers envisioned tropical, desert or deserted islands. None of it fit.

I was skeptical. I couldn’t handle another palm tree despite a vivid description, accompanied by photos and the Newfoundland Tourism website.

However, I couldn’t be more pleased!

The resulting logo was completed in a day, over MSN Messenger (Jenn lives in Elk Point, AB and I live in Edmonton). Though it has no lighthouses standing in for the “I” in Island as I had initally requested, I am thrilled with how it came out. When I ask my friends and family what they think of when they see it they have the following response; bubbles, camera lenses, family.

Bang! She got it right. I am bubbly, they do look like a group of lenses like you see on tv pointing towards the red carpet, and yup, family. All different sizes and all over the place, having fun. Just how I like them!

I really appreciate the work that Jenn put into this rebranding process, including customizing my blog header and options (who would have thought I had no contact link!). The most amazing thing is how fast it all came together, and how reasonably priced her services are. I could hardly believe the numbers on the invoice!
