After a long winter of being cooped up in doors, with nothing fun to shoot becasue the city dead and covered in snow, I finally got out of the house! My good friend Elizabeth from ENV Photography had arranged the cutest model for a Rock the Dress session. I was so glad I went out, even though I wasn’t feeling well at all! These are a few of my favorite shots from the hour or so I hung out with them!

I would love to hear what you think!

It was great to finally meet Kimberlee! I have been anticipating meeting her since she was born three months ago. It was also fantastic to catch up with Christy. If you have been a blog follower for long, you might remember Christy and Stirling’s extreme winter shoot. The one where it was -40 on New Years Day and I ended up with pneumonia. As you might also recall, Christy didn’t wear socks inside her awesome leather boots- things could have ended badly.

Christy- I only tell this story because you will always have a special place in my heart for that exact reason ;)

The best part of being a newborn photographer is capturing all of their itty bitty details. Like long, long eyelashes. And purple toenails. Please see the above story about the leather boots. Christy is all about the details. Little Kimberlee with her purple toenails is no exception. Love it!

Christy wanted outdoor photos of Kimberlee, which I will tell you is no simple task with an newborn. But I think we got some goodies! Aside from the fact that it was super bright, windy and dusty- it was perfect day!

Stirling- It’s too bad you were out of town! I can’t wait to catch up with you at a family session really soon!

I would love if you let me know what you think!

You know that old saying? The one that says ‘Everything happens for a reason’. Well it does. Lindsey and Jaydee were supposed to meet me in Jasper, Alberta for maternity photos while I was there a couple of weekends ago. Well a flat tire along the way rendered them unable to meet me in Jasper!

Then we supposed to shoot the following Sunday. But there were ridiculous winds that entire weekend. I can’t even tell you how ridiculous it was, so windy my house shook and my windows rattled and I gathered candles, just in case.

Which brings us to this Thursday, when Jaydee got off late and they arrived 20 minutes late for photos, which I had scheduled way past when I would normally schedule myself. To say I was concerned was an understatement. I had visions of the sun falling past the horizon and me sitting alone in the park in the dark, and Lindsey with no maternity photos.

However, because everything happens for a reason, I can show you these! That nice golden one, that’s how it looked shooting into the sun as Rundle Park was bathed in the most amazing light. I am so glad the calamity of errors happened, becasue if it hadn’t, I might not have had such a horrible time deciding which photos I should show for a sneak peak!

I love these photos, quite a lot. I hope Lindsey and Jaydee (and their baby when he/she is old enough to appreciate them) do too!

Oh, and also, is Lindsey not the cutest person ever? She reminds me a lot of Rachael McAdams. That said, I wouldn’t get them confused if they were standing in front of me, but she is just that Rachael McAdams kind of cute!

Thanks for coming out to see my guys ( I know it might have been easier to give up after all of the confusion!) I can’t wait to meet your baby!

Meet Hailey. Almost two years go we were taking her maternity photos in the same park (Rundle) in the same city (Edmonton). I am glad to say that having babies so close in age to each other has made us great friends. Of course, she puts up with sarcastic sense of humor (and I put up with her rolling her eyes at my fabulous jokes).

This time around, Hailey had a new idea for her photos. A nurse who was doing an ultrasound asked her if she planned on showing her tattoos in her maternity photos. Of course she was! However, I was super stoked when she took it to a whole other level and let us see all of her tattos! I think she looks radiant. Of course not all hot mommas to be would be comfortable taking off their top for the camera, but I am so glad she had the confidence to do it!

Congratulations to all of you! I can’t wait to meet baby Leo and take his  newborn photos when he arrives!

Well folks, the deed is done. The dates are set! I officially have travel plans regarding arriving and leaving the Island. I am going to be in Newfoundland from August 3 – September 7th! That’s a long time to enjoy the ocean and the backdrops Newfoundland gives me that I can’t find here in Edmonton!

I have been contacted a bunch of time for pricing information, so I have decided to share the postcards I have designed! This should give you the information you need, and if you have any additional questions at all, don’t hestitate to email me (amydonovan@shaw.ca)! I love to both catch up with old clients and meet new friends!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Every year, Bridget and I take a trip back to Newfoundland to visit Nanny, Poppy, Grand Dad, Aunt Gie, Aunt Lisa and CeCe (also known as Adrian). We always go in October. And it always rains for the duration of our trip. Of our 27 days home last year, there were 26 days of rain. The day we arrived was really nice. Apparently. I didn’t get in until almost mid night.

However, this year, I am being smart! We are going to go on our vacation in August. However, since it is the most popular month for photos, I will be working while I am vacationing. Why yes, you heard right. I love my job so much that I am going to take a working vacation.

Soooo…..

I am presently booking sessions all across the Island during the month of August. That’s right, St. John’s, Clarenville, Bonavista Pennisula, Port Blandford, Bay Roberts, Grandfalls and Corner Brook. I might even take a vacation day or two and make my way to Gros Morne since I haven’t seen it since I was a little girl.

What does all of this mean for you, my faithful blog readers? Well if you are Edmonton, you know now you must book your family, maternity and engagement sessions for April, May, June, July, September and October. If you are Newfoundland, you need to contact me at amydonovan@shaw.ca today to find out what day I will be in your town, and book your space. I will be on the Island for a full month, but I have limited bookings in each town, so don’t wait!

I can’t wait to see you!

Island in the Mist Photography LOGOSometimes thinking of the easiest thing is the hardest thing to do. Take my logo for example. I have been a wedding and portrait photographer for years, in both St. John’s and Edmonton. I have asked everyone I know from other photographers to the lady who makes my Chicken Bacon Ranch Subway sandwiches for their input about possible logo ideas. We all came up empty – for years. The only tasks not successfully completed by man; curing the common cold, sweeping up spilled sugar, and designing a logo with a name like Island in the Mist Photography.

It’s my own fault. I came up with the very long name long before I lived in Prairies. Back when I was in Newfoundland and what I wanted to shoot couldn’t be shot because of the weather. I called Newfoundland a Foggy Old Rock. Somehow, it wasn’t so flattering, but Island in the Mist did conjure up prettier mental images.

But I digress. No one could make me a logo. The name was too long. Designers envisioned tropical, desert or deserted islands. None of it fit.

Enter Jennifer Jacula from In-jenn-uity; claming to ‘Add awesomeness to your small business.’

I was skeptical. I couldn’t handle another palm tree despite a vivid description, accompanied by photos and the Newfoundland Tourism website.

However, I couldn’t be more pleased!

The resulting logo was completed in a day, over MSN Messenger (Jenn lives in Elk Point, AB and I live in Edmonton). Though it has no lighthouses standing in for the “I” in Island as I had initally requested, I am thrilled with how it came out. When I ask my friends and family what they think of when they see it they have the following response; bubbles, camera lenses, family.

Bang! She got it right. I am bubbly, they do look like a group of lenses like you see on tv pointing towards the red carpet, and yup, family. All different sizes and all over the place, having fun. Just how I like them!

I really appreciate the work that Jenn put into this rebranding process, including customizing my blog header and options (who would have thought I had no contact link!). The most amazing thing is how fast it all came together, and how reasonably priced her services are. I could hardly believe the numbers on the invoice!

If the photo on your living room wall commemorating moving on to the next stage of your life features a square cap and a long robe, you should be proud of yourself! However, as nice as those photos might be, you do have other options. Fun options! Check out these senior photos of Kerry and Thomas taken in St. Albert, Alberta. Of course, A portrait session for both of them was in order, but it was also a great chance to grab some fun shots of them together!
