From the minute I met Jo and Sean, I knew they were good people. I liked them right away. Really, if it wasn’t for a chance comment on a photo I had posted and an Epicure party I was invited to, we might never have met! So I was absolultely honored when they chose me to photograph their wedding.

From the minute I met Jo and Sean, I knew they were good people. I liked them right away. Really, if it wasn’t for a chance comment on a photo I had posted and an Epicure party I was invited to, we might never have met! So I was absolultely honored when they chose me to photograph their wedding.

I am a little sad. Don’t be concerned. You probably wouldn’t understand. No one else seems to.

You see, there’s this fantastic brown wooden chair with loopydiloop rockers on the bottom and a mustard yellow seat and back, that I really want. I mean really want! But I can’t have it.

It’s not even a matter of money.

You see. It’s sitting next to the dumpster, outside my townhouse. And it’s just perfect.

But I have been forbidden from a.) taking it away from the dumpster and b.) bringing it anywhere near the house. Why you ask? (I pray you are asking and not agreeing with Jamie and Daniel). a.) it might have germs and b.) we have no space. See, you are a good Blog follower! You agree with me!!!

It’s because I love old chairs. Always did. Ask my mother. My bedroom as a teenager was jam packed with old chairs in various stages of refinishing. Yes. I was that cool. While others were experimenting with booze and smokes, I was in the backyard with furniture stripper.

Anyway. Nothing to me is more fun than a photo with a suprise element! Like an old mustrady yellow chair in the middle of a field with a pretty pregnant lady. Can’t picture it? Don’t believe me?

Check this out.

While I was home in Newfoundland this summer, I went to my Grandmother’s house in a little town called Melrose. I love it there. Her house looks over the ocean and my Uncle has all of these buildings for his fishing operation that are loaded with character, because they all belonged to different generations of my family. Anyway, I had spent an amazing hour or so taking family portraits for my cousin Danielle. Let me tell you- I miss the ocean.

Before I could leave Nan’s that day, I had to go drag my sister out of the cozy wood stove heated living room and across the street to sit in an old chair I had found. I had made Lauren, my cousin’s Daughter sit it in it, then Danielle, and finally a big group shot. It was just that fun.

No one would expect to see an old leather chair (as weathered as can be) sitting by the side of the ocean tipped over and very sad looking. But the crazy thing is, no matter how sad old chairs are, if you sit them up straight, and put amazing people in them, they become an awesome prop.

Especially when they are in unexpected places, like by the side of the ocean, with my beautiful sister Maggie, in a little town called Melrose, on my annual October vacation.

So if anyone has some extra space (say the size of on old chair in their basement/garage/heart) could you help me to rescue it?! I will take your snaps in it! And you will love them. I promise!

Normally while I am out shooting with clients, it’s fun to stop and have a little treat along the way! Normally, we hit a Starbucks, but on Saturday while I was out with Kelly, Kerry and Kaila, we stopped by Fuss Cupcakes on Whyte Ave, in Edmonton!

I am happy to report that it was not a mistake. I loved my Bliss cupcake, but Kelly’s Scarlett O’Hara cupcaked looked devine! I couldn’t help but take a quick snap!

Anyway, while I am sure I won’t manage to eat one every day for lunch (unless I want to live my life in my bathrobe), but I think I have a new pit stop for future Whyte Ave photo shoots and client meetings!!!

Thanks for being awesome Fuss, you really are very yummy!

Kelly, Kaila, and Kerry all met up with me for some sisterly bonding time on Saturday night. We hung out on Whyte Ave for a few hours, had ourselves some scrumptious Fuss Cupcakes (more on that later!) and had a laugh. These 3 are awesome together!

This is my favorite photo from the whole session. I wasn’t sure it worked when I looked at it in camera, but I love it now. I think this would be very fun on a large canvas. Someday when I open a studio, this for sure will be hanging on the walls.

Thanks again for coming out to see me ladies! I had a great time. I can hardly wait for to be Kelly’s wedding photographer in Camore in 2011 because I know I will be working with such a great group!

“What should we wear for family portraits?”

It’s an awesome question that I get asked all the time. You are talking about pictures that will be cherished by friends and family for years to come. These family photos will be proudly displayed in your living room, until your next family portrait session. Nobody wants to have a 40×60″ canvas hanging behind their couch, that the kids’ friends make fun of because of Dad’s socks and sandals. These pictures should become an heirloom that the kids will love to have when they are grown- not embarrassed by what they chose to wear when they were a teenager.

So here are some ideas of what to wear (or leave in the closet) for great family portraits:

1.) Don’t do trendy. Since the 80′s everyone has made fun of skinny jeans and they seem to be back. Don’t let your tapered leg pants or any current must have trend be the brunt of jokes for the next 20 years. If you own them and want to wear them, fine. Just think about whether that’s how you want to remember yourself in 10 years.

2.) I should have ranked this number 1. There is no need to wear jeans and white tee shirts for family photos. Jeans and black shirts also fall into this category. You want to coordinate your outfits, not match them. Choose a color scheme and work with it. Jeans and neutral shirts for everyone if that’s the theme you like. Different colors from the same color palette look great. Soft colors with soft, bold colors with bold. Dress like you are headed to the same party! In fact, dress like you shopped in the same section of the store, just not from the same rack.

3.) The smaller the logo, the better it is. Nothing is more distracting in a family portrait than a giant NIKE Swoosh. Enough said. Does anyone else remember Chip n’ Pepper shirts? Iridescent Surf Style Jackets? Right. Because they are in your class photo from middle school. Don’t make your family photos suffer the same fate.

4.) The shoes make the outfit. A great outfit is complete with great shoes. If you own funky shoes, wear them! White sneakers show up like a purple elephant. As much as I love buying new runners, please don’t include yours in your family photos. If you don’t want them to stand out, keep with neutral. Also, please don’t be afraid to take them off! There is an excellent chance we will do some barefoot shots!

5.) If it fits, wear it. I am the last person who should comment on the fit of someone’s clothing. Just keep in mind that the camera does record every detail of your outfit. If you are thinking that an article of clothing might be too tight, it will definitely show up as too tight in your family photos. You don’t want this to happen. On the flip side, please don’t err on the side of caution and wear something that is clearly too big. Just make sure the outfit is comfortable and not accenting anything you don’t want accented. Oh, and along the lines of every detail, please keep in mind that it’s always best to iron your outfit before you come out for photos. Even if you aren’t a fanatical ironer, there’s nothing worse than wrinkled clothing preserved for prosperity.

6.) Comfort is key. If you are uncomfortable, don’t wear it. Family photos most often involve a bit of climbing on rocks or a walk through the park. Many a family portrait poser has ended up in a tree. My goal as a photographer is to have a fun photo session with you- you can see it in your photos! If you can’t have fun in your outfit because it’s too restricting, too revealing or you can’t get it dirty, please wear something else. It will make your family photo session much more enjoyable for you!

7.) As with weddings, it’s important not to try anything new the day you come out to see me. Don’t get a trendy new haircut or see a new colorist and ‘try something new’. In most cases, I have found, this ends badly. Stick with what you know! I am glad you want to get your hair done prior to your family photos! In fact, I think it’s a great idea. Just don’t do anything major- it might not turn out how you wanted.

8.) Cheesy ‘Cheese’. I am not a typical photographer. I don’t shoot in a studio. I shoot weddings and I shoot portraits, but I do both to capture people’s lives. I can’t shoot how fun you are if you are sitting in front of a blue background with studio lights! How would you even begin to look like your awesome self? I want you to relax and have fun. If you are not naturally a ‘smiler’, let me know! I have never said ‘Say Cheese’. Ever. I promise I won’t. Relax and have fun with your family. It is better to look totally natural than to have fakes smiles. Remember that giant canvas that will be hung behind the couch? That fake smile might be construed as a grimace when it’s blown up…just relax and look natural!

I can’t wait to meet you for your family photo session. If you have any specific questions, or would like to book your own family photo session, email me at amydonovan@shaw.ca.

I am not quite a week late with this post. I didn’t mean to be 6 days late at all, however, the people who paint x’s above doors threatned to come to our house this week. No one has been well. Some have been sicker than others. Some have been more patient than others. Some took their Pnuemonia back to Newfoundland and someone thought to bring a stomach bug to share will all the others.

But none the less.

Happy Birthday Bridget. I am sorry that your party was cancelled and your Dora Cupcake Cake is drying out in the fridge since last week. I am sorry you didn’t get to visit with your friends and wear your party hats. I am sorry your friends didn’t get their loot bags.

I am happy you are feeling better today. And even though I may have lost my patience when you pulled the chair into the kitchen and emptied the salt shaker while sitting on the stove, in the time it took me get to you from the living room- I still love you with all of my heart.

I love your unruly blonde hair and your big blue eyes. I love your stubborn streak because it’s like having an argument with myself, every day of my life. I love that you don’t like loud music (I hope this continues into teenagerdom). I love your little button nose and the fact that you insist on ‘boowing’ it about 300 times a day- causing you to wash away the yucky germs for 5 minutes in the sink. I love that when I tell you can’t do something, you do it anyway, and as irritating as it is now, I hope this continues into adulthood. Well, except throwing food on the floor, that you can give up right now.

I can’t make a list of all the things I love about you because the list just wouldn’t end. But know this my girl. I love you with all of my heart! Who would have thought that 2 years (and 6 days) ago, my life would have changed so much for the better!

Thank you for making my world just that much better! Happy Birthday baby girl! I love you.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day! It’s also Republic of Doyle night! Very exciting times in my house. And because it’s so exciting (and because I found this hiding on my hard drive) I thought I would share this photo of Cabot Tower, on Signal Hill in St. John’s. I took this super fast while I was waiting for a family to get ready for their family photos. I only took the one shot. But I think it worked out well!

I know, I know, every tourist to hit The Rock has a similiar shot.

But to this Newfoundland gal, on Republic of Doyle night, on St. Patrick’s Day, in Alberta, I enjoy it.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

Sean and Jo are just awesome and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding in two weeks at Fort Edmonton Park, in Edmonton. Aside from the fact that these two are perfect together (I have never heard anyone laugh as much together), Fort Edmonton Park is definately one of my favorite places to shoot in Edmonton.
I am so glad that we braved the cold on Saturday to shoot these. It was freezing when we headed out in the morning, and I was certain that it was going to rain. However, clearly I am not a weather girl. Later in the afternoon it was so nice I was motivated to get out and rake my lawn. I don’t even garden! What a beautiful day it turned out to be.

I had a blast as usual with these two. A few months back, they both had me in stitches while I shot their maternity photos. I was stoked when they asked me to be their wedding photographer!

I hope you love this set as much as I do Sean and Jo, I had a hard time picking favorites to Blog! I can hardly wait for the wedding!

Meet Phil, Andrea, Ryan and Jack. Phil is my favorite cousin on my Dad’s side (sorry other cousins- though, I am sure you all knew before now). This is his wife Andrea, son Ryan and his dog Jack, and they are awesome too.

This past week I travelled to Calgary where they live, because an Aunt on my Mom’s side was in the hospital. My Mom and Stepdad were there as well, so we took the opportunity to go to Phil’s house to meet Baby Ryan, who was born on Christmas Eve. Bridget was excited for a full week to meet The Baby. Here he is patient as anything waiting to have his bum changed.

I love this photo. Love it. Phil looks so pleased. With himself, with the baby, with the cousin in his living room taking a few snaps while her daughter rearranged the furniture in his kitchen and filled the cofffee pot with oranges. You know, some things are more pleasing that others. Here is my Bridget enjoying ‘The baby’. She has been talking about him ever since and is actually making a permanent dent in my leg while she leans on me watching me blog about him. I expect that if they didn’t live 3 hours away, she might try to take him out for morning promenades on the boardwalk. She will make quite the Mommy in 25 years. But in the meantime, I think this photo needs to be on my mantle.
And just because no matter how beautiful any baby may be, their feet are the most amazing thing in the world… Here are Baby Ryan’s feet cradled in Mommy and Daddy’s hands.

Phil and Andrea, I am so gla we got to hang out last weekend! And thanks for making Bridget a Big Cousin. I am sure she will cherish the position.
